Demonstrators burned an effigy of Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, a US-based Khalistani activist and leader of the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), condemning his secessionist activities. Amritsar, Punjab, January 29, 2025 - Following the vandalism of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s statue in Amritsar on January 26, where a youth desecrated the statue by striking it with a hammer and blackening its face, the Republican Party of India (RPI) held a critical meeting. National President and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, along with Punjab President Kulwant Singh Bhai, condemned the act as an attack on Ambedkar’s legacy and demanded the invocation of the National Security Act (NSA) against the perpetrator, identified as Akashdeep Singh from Moga. The leaders met with Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni, urging swift and stringent action. Athawale also called for Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s resignation, citing government negligence, and emphasized that such acts disrespecting the architect of India’s Constitution would not be tolerated.
